Foster Care — What I Wish More People Knew

I am going to be honest with you right from the start.
I did not fully understand what foster care was when we began this journey. Not even close. And I think that is the case for a lot of people. Which is exactly why I want to talk about it.
It Started With a Decision
My husband and I had decided that our son, who was nine at the time, was old enough and mature enough to have a sibling. So we contacted a social worker and began the screening process for adoption.
And just to be clear, we wanted a daughter. We had it all figured out. Or so we thought.
In the meantime, we started visiting Hannah’s Place of Safety. We thought we were just going to volunteer for a little while, get comfortable around babies, and ease ourselves into the idea of having a little one at home again.
That was the plan.
God clearly had other ideas.
The Day Everything Changed
I will never forget the first day we walked through those doors.
The founders welcomed us and gave us a full rundown of what Hannah’s Place of Safety does and how it all works. And I remember standing there thinking, can I just take them all home? Every single one of them? My heart was all over the place. These tiny, vulnerable babies and the love and dedication poured into each one of them, it was overwhelming in the most beautiful way.
On the way home that day I turned to my husband and said something I had not planned to say.
I told him I felt this was what God was calling us to do.
Not just volunteer. Not just observe. But to actually open our home.
We Wanted a Girl. God Sent Us Boys.
On our first day holding babies, my husband held one little boy — I will call him Baby C. And I held another — Baby M.
We fell in love. Both of us. Instantly.
And I remember sitting with that feeling on the way home thinking, God is this really what you want? Me to be a boy mom? I already had one boy. Now two more? Can I actually do this?
But we kept going back. More visits. And then it stopped being just visits. We were changing nappies. Bathing them. Doing feeds. Showing up like we already belonged there.
Because we did.
The Call That Changed Our Family Forever
One day the founder of Hannah’s Place of Safety asked if we would like to foster Baby M.
The emotions I felt in that moment were beyond anything I can properly describe. Pure excitement mixed with absolute terror mixed with a love so fierce it almost knocked me sideways.
And then the social worker came and I realised something.
I did not actually understand what fostering meant.
In my heart I wanted to adopt. I wanted Baby M to be ours forever in every legal sense of the word. So when the social worker explained the process I panicked. I cried. I was terrified that someone was going to come and take my baby away from me.
I asked about adoption. The biological parents said no.
And that is where I had to learn something really important about foster care, something I wish someone had explained to me gently right at the beginning.
What Foster Care Actually Is
Fostering a child is not adoption. It does not mean the child is yours forever from day one. What it means is that you open your home and your heart to give a child a safe, loving, stable environment, while the hope remains that their biological family may one day be in a position to be reunified with them.
It is not about replacing a family. It is about being a bridge.
The founder called me personally and talked me through it. She was patient and kind and honest. She helped me understand that this was not about permanent ownership, it was about giving Baby M a loving home for as long as he needed one.
And I said yes.
Of course I said yes.
We Were a Family of Four by Christmas 2024
Baby M came home to us and just like that, our family of three became a family of four.
My nine year old got a little brother instead of a little sister. My husband became a boy dad times two. And I, the woman who came in wanting a daughter, became completely and utterly devoted to a little boy who was not supposed to be mine but absolutely is.
He turns two next month. And I cannot imagine a single day without him.
What I Want You to Know
If you have ever thought about foster care but talked yourself out of it because it felt too complicated, too emotional, or too uncertain, I understand. I felt all of those things.
But here is what I know now that I did not know then.
The process is not always smooth. There will be paperwork and social workers and moments where you cry on the phone not fully understanding what is happening. There will be uncertainty and questions and days where you wonder if you are doing the right thing.
And then your little one will look up at you and smile.
And you will know.
You will absolutely know.

You Are Further Along Than You Think

Can I say something to you this morning?
I need you to stop for just a moment. Put down the to do list. Stop scrolling. Stop comparing. Stop measuring yourself against where you thought you would be by now.
And just breathe.
Because I want to tell you something that I genuinely believe with my whole heart.
You are further along than you think.
We Are So Hard on Ourselves
There is something about being human that makes us incredibly good at seeing everything we have not done yet and almost completely blind to everything we have already come through.
We look in the mirror and see the gap between where we are and where we want to be. We scroll through other people’s highlight reels and measure our behind the scenes against their best moments. We lie awake at night thinking about everything that is still unfinished, still uncertain, still not quite right.
And we completely forget to look back at how far we have actually walked.
Look Back For Just a Moment
Think about who you were a year ago. Two years ago. Five years ago.
Think about the things that kept you up at night then that you have since walked through. The fears you faced. The hard days you survived. The moments you were absolutely certain you could not go on and then you did.
You did.
Every single time, you got up. You kept going. You chose to stay in the game even when the game felt impossible.
That is not nothing. That is extraordinary.
Growth Does Not Always Look Like Progress
Here is something I have had to learn the hard way.
Growth is not always loud. It does not always look like a promotion or a milestone or something you can post about. Sometimes growth looks like finally asking for help. Sometimes it looks like choosing rest instead of pushing yourself to breaking point. Sometimes it looks like saying no to the wrong thing so you have space for the right thing.
Sometimes growth looks like just getting through a hard season still standing.
And still standing counts. It absolutely counts.
You Are Allowed to Be Proud of Yourself
I want to give you permission to do something that might feel uncomfortable.
Be proud of yourself today. Not when you finish the next thing. Not when you reach the next goal. Not when everything is sorted and settled and certain.
Today. Right now. As you are.
Be proud of the life you are building even when it is still messy. Be proud of the love you pour into the people around you. Be proud of the way you keep showing up even on the days when showing up is the hardest thing in the world.
You are doing better than you give yourself credit for.
A Note to the One Who Needed This Today
Maybe you woke up this morning feeling behind. Feeling like everyone else has it together and you are still figuring it out. Feeling like the distance between your dreams and your reality is just too far to cross.

What Nature Taught Me About Life Today

I have been spending a lot of time lately just looking. Really looking. At the plants in my garden. At the flowers outside my window. At the little creatures living quietly in the spaces we walk past without noticing.
And nature keeps teaching me things I did not expect to learn.
Beauty and Damage Can Live in the Same Place
I took a photo of a flower recently. It was genuinely stunning. Soft white petals, a warm yellow centre, the kind of thing you stop and stare at.
But the leaf behind it told a completely different story. Damaged. Eaten. Worn.
And I stood there thinking, how much does that look like us?
We get dressed. We put on our faces. We show the world our best petals. And deep down some of us are carrying leaves that have been through things nobody can see.
I am not saying that is wrong. I am saying it is human. But I wonder sometimes when we will give ourselves and each other permission to show the whole picture. The beauty and the damage together. Because honestly that is where the real beauty lives.
A tracksuit and no makeup is not less beautiful. It might actually be the most beautiful and true version of you there is.
The Past, The Present and The Future — All in One Picture
On a gloomy morning I looked at a frangipani tree and saw something that stopped me completely.
The dead leaves and fallen flowers on the ground that is the past. Done. Released. And even in their dying they become food for the soil, nourishment for what comes next.
The blossomed flowers open right now that is the present. Fully here. Fully alive.
And the tiny buds not yet open that is the future. Waiting quietly. Full of promise.
All three existing in the same moment on the same tree.
If your day feels gloomy today look for the buds. They are there even when you cannot see them yet. Your future is already forming even when your present feels heavy and your past feels like dead leaves on the ground.
Let the dead leaves go. They have already done their job.

There is a gecko in my hubby’s enclosure that you would never know was there unless you looked very carefully. Hidden. Quiet. Unbothered by whether anyone sees it or not.
I am a lot like that gecko.
I am not the one dressed to impress in a crowd. I am jeans and a t-shirt. I am raw and real and completely unbothered by whether that fits someone else’s idea of what I should look like.
And I want to say to you today, you do not need to perform for anyone. You do not need short dresses or full makeup or a carefully curated version of yourself to earn your place in any room.
Be raw. Because raw is real. And real is the most magnificent thing you can be.
Take me as I am. If you do not like it, that is on you. Not me.

Self Reflect Sunday — The Real Version Nobody Talks About

Let me tell you how my Sunday actually started this morning.
I woke up with an absolute fright because Baby M was not next to me. Heart in my throat, fully panicked, only to find out he had quietly gotten up, toddled off, and gone to greet the whole family by himself like he owned the place.
Nearly gave his mother a heart attack before 8am. Completely unbothered. That is my boy.
And honestly, that is also kind of how Sundays go in our house.
Breakfast in Our House Is a Full Contact Sport
My husband makes breakfast and coffee on Sundays which I am eternally grateful for. But getting Baby M to actually eat and not just enthusiastically shove everything into his mouth at once is its own special kind of adventure. And then he decided this particular Sunday morning was the perfect time to wake up his big brother Big Boy G.
Which brings me to the next chapter of our Sunday.
Big Boy G and the Great School Preparation Saga.
I have tried. I have really genuinely tried to manage this process. And I want you to know that I have officially and peacefully surrendered that responsibility to his father. My only hill to die on is the shower and the hair routine. And even that, that alone, is a mission I could write an entire separate blog about.
Some battles you choose. Some you hand over to your husband and walk away with what is left of your sanity.
This is called growth.
Builders Warehouse, a Big Family Lunch and the Best Kind of Afternoon
We managed to get ourselves to Builders Warehouse and back like functioning adults which felt like a win. And then came the highlight of the day, a big beautiful lunch made by hubby’s cousin. The kind of meal that makes you sit back afterwards and just feel genuinely grateful for family and food and Sunday afternoons that ask nothing of you.
Baby M went down for his nap after lunch and I did what any sensible mother would do.
I napped with him.

We live in a world full of people performing. People who dress themselves up in importance and expect you to bow down to it. People who take and take and smile while doing it and then wonder why you eventually have nothing left to give.
You do not owe those people your Sunday. You do not owe them any day actually.
Protect your time. Protect your energy. Protect your peace. And spend this Sunday and every Sunday, with the people who genuinely deserve to be in your space.

I have been thinking about makeup lately.
Not in a casual way. In a deep, sitting with it at night, kind of way.
I stopped wearing makeup years ago. Not because I did not know how. Not because I did not own any. But because somewhere along the way I realised that every time I put it on I was covering something up. Not just my skin. But myself. The real, unfiltered, complicated, beautiful mess that is actually me.
And I made a decision. I was done hiding.
But Then I Started a Business
And suddenly all these thoughts came creeping back in.

Every Day Is a Celebration — If You Let It Be

Yesterday was Father’s Day.
But here is the thing that was sitting on my heart yesterday as I watched my husband with our boys.
Why do we wait for one day a year to celebrate the people we love?
Why does Dad get breakfast in bed on the third Sunday of June and then spend the other 364 days quietly doing everything without anyone making a fuss? Why does Mom get flowers on Mother’s Day and then goes back to being invisible the very next morning? Why do we save the good plates and the special moments and the intentional appreciation for the calendar dates?
The people we love deserve better than that. And honestly so do we.
Self Care Day Is the Same Problem
World Self Care Day is on the 24th of July. And I love that it exists. I really do. But I have been thinking a lot lately about how we treat self care the same way we treat Father’s Day.
Like a once a year event.
Like something we have to earn or schedule or justify.
Like it needs a special occasion to be valid.
And I want to gently push back on that. Because self care is not a treat. It is not a reward for surviving a hard week. It is not something you get to have when everything else is done.

It does not have to be expensive. It does not have to be elaborate. It does not have to take hours.

No really. That is exactly where I am right now.
Toasted cheese in hand, Baby M probably getting into something he should not be, and a quiet little voice in my head asking — Nicole when last did you write a blog?
And honestly? I could not remember. Which made me ask myself the question every small business owner eventually asks themselves on a slow Tuesday.
Am I lazy? Or is life just happening?
I think it is mostly life happening. With a side of demotivation that nobody warned me about when I started this journey.
The Honest Truth About Running a Small Business
Nobody tells you that there will be days where you built something you are genuinely proud of and still cannot find the energy to show up for it. Days where the motivation just quietly packed its bags and left without saying goodbye.
And then you feel guilty about that. Because you should be hustling right? You should be posting and blogging and growing and going.
But sometimes you are also just a mom with a disappointing school report in one hand and a toasted cheese sandwich in the other, trying to hold it all together.
And that is okay. That is real. That is human.
But Here Is What I Also Know
Charm & Zen Creations has been growing. Quietly, steadily, beautifully — it has been growing.
Customers have been buying. Friends and family have been sharing and supporting. Orders have been coming in and every time income comes in I put it straight back into more stock because I believe in this with my whole heart.
So maybe I have not blogged in a while. Maybe the content calendar went a little quiet. Maybe I sat with a toasted cheese sandwich more than I sat at my laptop.
But the business? The business is alive and growing and I am so deeply grateful for every single person who has chosen to shop with Charm & Zen Creations.

The Day Baby M Headbutted Me Awake and Everything Was Perfect

So this was Monday. And I am only getting to write about it now on Wednesday because that is just life with a toddler and a growing business and approximately zero spare minutes in between.
But I have to tell you about it because it was one of those days that just needs to be written down.
It started the way most of my mornings start lately.
Fast asleep. Then suddenly — BANG. Baby M had decided that gently calling for me was simply not going to cut it. So he did what he always does when he wakes up before me. He headbutted me. Forehead to forehead. No warning. No mercy.
And then he looked at me with the biggest smile I have ever seen in my life and let out the most joyful shriek you can imagine.
That is his thing right now. The shriek. It is how he processes his happiness and his excitement and honestly everything he feels. It is loud and it is chaotic and it is the best sound in the entire world.
Good morning to me.
The Plan That Was Not Quite the Plan
Monday we had a mission. Drive to Langebaan to fetch my friend and her family and bring them back to Cape Town.
Except my husband thought we were leaving at 12pm. I thought we were leaving at 10am when he came off call. We compromised at 11am which is basically marriage in a nutshell.
Diesel stop. Snack grab. Baby M getting suspicious about why we were still in the car. Off we went.
One hour and forty five minutes to Langebaan with a toddler who was fighting sleep with everything he had. We kept him awake the whole way there which felt like a victory. On the way home he finally gave in and napped like the little angel he occasionally pretends to be.
The Discovery That Would Have Saved Everyone
Baby M was fine on the way there. Baby M was napping on the way back. But somewhere in the middle — somewhere around the pitstop at the garage — Baby M decided he had had enough of being in the car and made his feelings very clearly known.
I tried everything. Toys. Snacks. Songs. Funny faces.
And then in a moment of pure desperate inspiration I took off his shoes and socks.
Instant peace. Instant calm.
He sat there wiggling his little toes like he had just been handed the greatest gift of his entire life.
If only I had known that two hours earlier. Honestly someone needs to write a book.
But the Best Part
We found my friend. My sister friend. The one I always say I am going to make more time for and then life gets in the way and suddenly four years have passed since we actually did something together.
Four years.
Life be lifing as they say. Finances. Kids. Distance. The chaos of just getting through each day. It all adds up and before you know it you are standing in her brother’s driveway in Langebaan wondering where the time went.
But Monday we made the time. And it was worth every kilometre and every toddler shriek and every minute of the drive.
Because some friendships are just good for your soul. The kind where you pick up exactly where you left off. The kind that remind you who you are outside of all the roles you play every day.
The Lesson From Monday
Take the drive. Make the plan even if the timing gets mixed up. Go and fetch your person even when it is far and the toddler is tired and you are not sure you have the energy.
Because life is short and we keep saying that and then we keep letting it get in the way of the things that actually matter most.
Also take your toddler’s shoes and socks off in the car. Trust me on this one. Monday me wishes I had figured that out two hours sooner.

What God Has Taught Me Through Building This Business

I want to start by saying something honestly.
I am not the most eloquent when it comes to talking about God. I do not always have the words to pray. Some days I just sit quietly and trust that He knows my heart. And somehow that has always been enough.
But building Charm & Zen Creations has taught me more about faith than almost anything else in my life. And I think it is time I wrote about that.
He Was in It Before I Even Knew It
When I started Charm & Zen Creations I was not following a grand plan. I was a woman who had been through valleys so deep I sometimes could not see the top. I had tried many things. Failed at some. Kept going anyway.
And then one day this business came together and I looked at it and thought — I did not plan this. Not really. Something bigger than me was moving the pieces.
I believe that something was God.
Not in a dramatic lightning bolt kind of way. But in the quiet steady way He has always shown up in my life. In the nudge. In the door that opened just when I needed it. In the customer who found me at exactly the right moment. In the income that came in just when the cupboard was getting bare.
He was in all of it. I just had to slow down enough to notice.
He Taught Me That Timing Is Not Mine to Control
I am not a patient person by nature. I want things to happen and I want them to happen now. Building a business has cured me of nothing in that department but God has been quietly teaching me anyway.
There were days when orders were slow and I wondered if I had made a mistake. Days when motivation packed its bags and left. Days when I sat with a toasted cheese sandwich wondering what I was even doing.
And then something would shift. An order would come in. A kind message from a customer. A post that reached someone who needed it. A reminder that slow does not mean stopped and quiet does not mean finished.
God kept reminding me that His timing is not my timing. And His timing is always better.
He Taught Me That Purpose Is More Powerful Than Profit
I did not start Charm & Zen Creations just to make money. I started it because I needed something that was mine. Something that did not require me to hide who I am or pretend to be someone I am not.
And somewhere along the way it became something bigger than I ever planned.
Hannah’s Place of Safety. The Back a Buddy campaign. The blogs about mental health and self love and showing up even when it is hard. The customers who message me to say that something I wrote touched them on a hard day.
None of that was in my business plan. All of it was in God’s.
He takes our small offerings, our little shops and our honest words and our resin pocket hugs and our flower earrings, and He uses them for something we could never have orchestrated ourselves.
He Taught Me That I Am Stronger Than I Think
I have been through things that should have broken me. Some of them tried very hard to do exactly that.
But I am still here. Still building. Still showing up. Still believing that the best chapters are ahead.
That is not me. That is God holding me together on the days when I had nothing left to hold myself with.
And building this business has been a daily reminder of that. Every time I pushed through the fear and posted anyway. Every time I sent the email even though my hands were shaking. Every time I chose to keep going when stopping would have been so much easier.
He was in every single one of those moments.
He Is Not Done Yet
Charm & Zen Creations is still growing. Still becoming. I do not know exactly where it is going but I have stopped needing to know that.
What I know is that it started with a purpose. It is carried by something bigger than me. And it is going to end up exactly where it is supposed to be.
I do not always have the words to pray. But I silently speak to God and He knows my heart.
And building this business has taught me that He always answers. Maybe not in the way I expected. But always in the way I needed.
Glory to God. For all of it. Even the hard parts. Especially the hard parts.
