            Foster Care \u2014 What I Wish More People Knew <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            I am going to be honest with you right from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            I did not fully understand what foster care was when we began this journey. Not even close. And I think that is the case for a lot of people. Which is exactly why I want to talk about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            It Started With a Decision<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            My husband and I had decided that our son, who was nine at the time, was old enough and mature enough to have a sibling. So we contacted a social worker and began the screening process for adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And just to be clear, we wanted a daughter. We had it all figured out. Or so we thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            In the meantime, we started visiting Hannah’s Place of Safety. We thought we were just going to volunteer for a little while, get comfortable around babies, and ease ourselves into the idea of having a little one at home again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            That was the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            God clearly had other ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The Day Everything Changed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            I will never forget the first day we walked through those doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The founders welcomed us and gave us a full rundown of what Hannah’s Place of Safety does and how it all works. And I remember standing there thinking, can I just take them all home? Every single one of them? My heart was all over the place. These tiny, vulnerable babies and the love and dedication poured into each one of them, it was overwhelming in the most beautiful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            On the way home that day I turned to my husband and said something I had not planned to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            I told him I felt this was what God was calling us to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Not just volunteer. Not just observe. But to actually open our home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            We Wanted a Girl. God Sent Us Boys.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            On our first day holding babies, my husband held one little boy \u2014 I will call him Baby C. And I held another \u2014 Baby M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            We fell in love. Both of us. Instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And I remember sitting with that feeling on the way home thinking, God is this really what you want? Me to be a boy mom? I already had one boy. Now two more? Can I actually do this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            But we kept going back. More visits. And then it stopped being just visits. We were changing nappies. Bathing them. Doing feeds. Showing up like we already belonged there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Because we did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The Call That Changed Our Family Forever<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            One day the founder of Hannah’s Place of Safety asked if we would like to foster Baby M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The emotions I felt in that moment were beyond anything I can properly describe. Pure excitement mixed with absolute terror mixed with a love so fierce it almost knocked me sideways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And then the social worker came and I realised something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            I did not actually understand what fostering meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            In my heart I wanted to adopt. I wanted Baby M to be ours forever in every legal sense of the word. So when the social worker explained the process I panicked. I cried. I was terrified that someone was going to come and take my baby away from me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            I asked about adoption. The biological parents said no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And that is where I had to learn something really important about foster care, something I wish someone had explained to me gently right at the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            What Foster Care Actually Is<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Fostering a child is not adoption. It does not mean the child is yours forever from day one. What it means is that you open your home and your heart to give a child a safe, loving, stable environment, while the hope remains that their biological family may one day be in a position to be reunified with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            It is not about replacing a family. It is about being a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The founder called me personally and talked me through it. She was patient and kind and honest. She helped me understand that this was not about permanent ownership, it was about giving Baby M a loving home for as long as he needed one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And I said yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Of course I said yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            We Were a Family of Four by Christmas 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Baby M came home to us and just like that, our family of three became a family of four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            My nine year old got a little brother instead of a little sister. My husband became a boy dad times two. And I, the woman who came in wanting a daughter, became completely and utterly devoted to a little boy who was not supposed to be mine but absolutely is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            He turns two next month. And I cannot imagine a single day without him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            What I Want You to Know<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            If you have ever thought about foster care but talked yourself out of it because it felt too complicated, too emotional, or too uncertain, I understand. I felt all of those things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            But here is what I know now that I did not know then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The process is not always smooth. There will be paperwork and social workers and moments where you cry on the phone not fully understanding what is happening. There will be uncertainty and questions and days where you wonder if you are doing the right thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And then your little one will look up at you and smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And you will know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            You will absolutely know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Foster care is not for everyone. But if there is a tug on your heart, even a small one, please do not ignore it. Reach out to Hannah’s Place of Safety or your nearest Department of Social Development office and just ask a question. That is all it takes to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Because I want to tell you something that I genuinely believe with my whole heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            You are further along than you think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            We Are So Hard on Ourselves<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            There is something about being human that makes us incredibly good at seeing everything we have not done yet and almost completely blind to everything we have already come through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            We look in the mirror and see the gap between where we are and where we want to be. We scroll through other people’s highlight reels and measure our behind the scenes against their best moments. We lie awake at night thinking about everything that is still unfinished, still uncertain, still not quite right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And we completely forget to look back at how far we have actually walked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Look Back For Just a Moment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Think about who you were a year ago. Two years ago. Five years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Think about the things that kept you up at night then that you have since walked through. The fears you faced. The hard days you survived. The moments you were absolutely certain you could not go on and then you did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            You did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Every single time, you got up. You kept going. You chose to stay in the game even when the game felt impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            That is not nothing. That is extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Growth Does Not Always Look Like Progress<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Here is something I have had to learn the hard way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Growth is not always loud. It does not always look like a promotion or a milestone or something you can post about. Sometimes growth looks like finally asking for help. Sometimes it looks like choosing rest instead of pushing yourself to breaking point. Sometimes it looks like saying no to the wrong thing so you have space for the right thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Sometimes growth looks like just getting through a hard season still standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And still standing counts. It absolutely counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            You Are Allowed to Be Proud of Yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            I want to give you permission to do something that might feel uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Be proud of yourself today. Not when you finish the next thing. Not when you reach the next goal. Not when everything is sorted and settled and certain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Today. Right now. As you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Be proud of the life you are building even when it is still messy. Be proud of the love you pour into the people around you. Be proud of the way you keep showing up even on the days when showing up is the hardest thing in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            You are doing better than you give yourself credit for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            A Note to the One Who Needed This Today<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Maybe you woke up this morning feeling behind. Feeling like everyone else has it together and you are still figuring it out. Feeling like the distance between your dreams and your reality is just too far to cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            I see you. I have been you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And I want you to know the fact that you are still here, still trying, still hoping, still reading words like these looking for something to hold onto. That is proof that you have not given up on yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Do not give up on yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The best chapters of your story have not been written yet. And you, messy, beautiful, still becoming you, are exactly the right person to write them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
